Phase 1 Orthodontics: What Parents Need to Know
Many parents wonder when the right time is for their child to see an orthodontist. While braces are often associated with teenagers, some children benefit from early orthodontic treatment, also known as Phase 1 orthodontics or interceptive orthodontics. This proactive approach can help correct developing dental issues before they become more serious.
What Is Phase 1 Orthodontics?
Phase 1 orthodontics is an early treatment plan for children, usually between ages 6 and 10, when they still have a mix of baby and permanent teeth. The goal is to guide jaw growth, correct bite problems, and create space for incoming adult teeth, reducing the need for more complex treatment later.
Signs Your Child Might Need Early Orthodontic Treatment
Your child’s dentist or orthodontist may recommend Phase 1 treatment if they have:
- Severe crowding or spacing – Permanent teeth don’t have enough room to come in properly.
- Bite problems – Overbite, underbite, crossbite, or an open bite.
- Early loss of baby teeth – Can lead to shifting teeth and misalignment.
- Thumb-sucking or tongue-thrusting habits – These can affect jaw and tooth development.
- Speech issues or difficulty chewing – Sometimes linked to misaligned teeth or jaws.
Common Phase 1 Treatments
Depending on your child’s needs, their orthodontist may recommend:
- Palatal expanders – Widen the upper jaw to make room for adult teeth.
- Partial braces – Used on select teeth to improve alignment.
- Space maintainers – Hold space for adult teeth after early loss of baby teeth.
- Functional appliances – Help guide jaw growth and improve bite.
Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment
- Reduces the need for tooth extractions or jaw surgery later
- Encourages healthy jaw growth and development
- Makes future orthodontic treatment faster and easier
- Improves speech, chewing, and facial balance
What Happens After Phase 1?
Once Phase 1 treatment is complete, most children enter a resting period to allow their remaining permanent teeth to come in naturally. Around age 11-13, their orthodontist will evaluate if they need Phase 2 treatment (typically braces or aligners) to refine their smile.
Should Your Child See an Orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an evaluation by age 7. Even if your child doesn’t need early treatment, this check-up ensures their teeth and jaws are developing properly.
